What we mean by subtext
Every book, film, record and object here comes with one line about what it is really about. Here is why.
Most shops describe what a thing is. We try to say what it is about.
Under every title on this site there is one short line. Not a review, not a star rating, just the thing underneath: the reason it is worth your evening.
Why one line
Because one line is enough to know if something is for you, and short enough that we have to mean it. If we can't write the line, we probably shouldn't be stocking it.
The best things say more than they say out loud.
Why these four
- Books, for the long evenings.
- Film, mostly the classics that reward a second watch.
- Music, on records you play from start to finish.
- Home, the few objects that keep you company while you do all of the above.
Have a look around the new arrivals, or start with Middlemarch.
